The very same thing happened to me about 3 years ago. I have not been back to Circuit City since. I hate mail-in rebates.

The funny thing is that I was just talking to someone at work about this very same thing this afternoon.

Oh, I guess I should add my story.

On the web site was a 512 MB thumb drive for $40 after $35 mail-in rebate. The web site said there was a rebate, which I was presented a link to once I checked out. I opted for the in-store pickup and grabbed it on my home from class. Paid $75 plus 5% sales tax. Went home, filled out receipt, documented everything, and mailed it in. Several weeks later I got a letter saying the rebate was denied. No explination, just a denial letter. So I called. The phone rep said the rebate required it to be an in-store purchase. I stated I picked it up from the store. His response? Yep... you got it. You paid for it online, so it's an online purchase.

And like I said, I have not been back. In my town though, that leaves me OfficeMax, Staples, Sam's Club, and Wal-Mart for my electronics.
