Has HD-DVD been cracked?

It appears that the new anti-piracy DRM technology AACS (Advanced Access Content System), created by Microsoft, has been “hacked” already. Apparently a DRM reverse-engineer going by the name of muslix64 has written a new program called BackupHDDVD to decrypt and dismantle AACS on a Windows PC. Entering a crypto into the utility (think windows authentication key) and the program will transfer a copy of the HD-DVD onto your hard drive allowing you to watch it in any HD-DVD compatible player. Now things get a little worse. The Blu-Ray disc also use the AACS DRM encryption, however Blu-Ray has added a few twist with “watermarking” and BD+ copy protection. These added layers of protection might be the reason that the movie industy is all for Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. If this crack proves to be workable on large scale and we start to see the wide spread piracy of High-Def content look for HD-DVD to fall off the map. The movie industy has no problem bailing on a format they feel isn’t capable to keeping their coffers full. Watch the movie below to see things in action. Welcome to CrzyLand.

Congradulatings and thanks to muslix64, well done! I guess it’s the reality that given physical acces to a macine, anything like this can and will be broken. Everyone just has to make sure to mirror it when it comes out to stop movie companies keeping it under wraps. The video above was well made too.
